Although the precise origins of the veil are unknown, it is generally believed that it was used to cover a woman’s face to “protect” her from men’s stares and as an outward sign that she was respectable, pure, and off-limits. Veils are still used by women in many parts of the world for both cultural and religious reasons, and their use is heavily debated by those who feel they are symbols of female oppression and those who feel they should not be condemned just because they are not Western. Restrictive Baggage
